Liquid Kicks Top Coats Technical Data Sheet
LK Top Coats are a high-quality, water-based hybrid acrylic-polyurethane resin designed for use on leather and canvas. All products are manufactured in-house by LK Top Coats under strict quality control.
Preparation
Use a clean, lint-free microfiber cloth dampened with Essential Deglazer to clean only the leather surface you intend to paint. Don't overclean the surface. You should feel the surface change from smooth to tacky as you clean it. Once the feeling changes, it's sufficiently cleaned. Let the surface sit for 10 to 20 minutes to allow the solvents to escape. Don't force it to dry. Remove any dust or dirt with a clean, dry synthetic paintbrush.
Apply paint
Work in light coats until the color reaches the desired tone. Let each coat dry before moving on to the next. Once all the color is applied, let it dry thoroughly. You can do this by leaving it for 24 hours or by using a hairdryer or heat gun set to a maximum temperature of 175 degrees Celsius. Let the surface cool completely before applying the LK Top Coats.
Applying LK Top Coat
LK Top Coats finishers can be applied with a brush in 2 thin layers, but the best way to apply it is with an airbrush with a tip size between 0.2 mm - 0.7 mm and an air pressure between 25 psi - 35 psi.
Spray the topcoat directly onto the surface from a distance of 10 to 15 cm with an airbrush, or from 10 to 20 cm with a spray gun. Apply the topcoat in even strokes, working from left to right and top to bottom, overlapping each previous stroke to create medium-wet layers. Let the topcoat dry before applying the next layer.
Drying
LK Top Coat finishers are best dried with a hairdryer or heat gun at a temperature no higher than 175 degrees Celsius. Air drying takes 35 to 50 minutes, depending on the ambient temperature and humidity. Drying with a hairdryer or heat gun should not exceed 10 minutes.
LK Top Coats are ready to use after complete drying, but full chemical and scratch resistance is only achieved after 12 hours of curing at a normal room temperature of 21 degrees Celsius.
Processing time
Once the product is poured into an open-air container such as an airbrush cup or mixing cup, it begins curing. A test showed that in a 236ml airbrush cup at 21 degrees Celsius, the product was usable for two hours before performance was affected.
In a similar test in a 500ml cup, the product was usable for 6 hours. To extend shelf life, keep unused portions covered with a cap or lid. The shelf life of unopened bottles of LK Top Coat has been proven to be longer than 1 year under normal conditions.
Coverage
One 59ml bottle is sufficient for more than 15 pairs of leather shoes or one large leather car seat. Coverage on canvas depends on the type of canvas and its size.
Storage
Store between 10 and 25 degrees Celsius and away from prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to prevent oxidation. Prolonged exposure to temperatures above 50 degrees Celsius and below 0 degrees Celsius may result in reduced product performance. Keep the lid closed when not in use to prevent drying out.
Cleaning up
Clean all tools immediately with water, acetone, or Essential Deglazer. Cleaning dried topcoats requires harsh solvents such as MEK or volatile paint strippers. Remove all traces of finisher from the airbrush or spray gun immediately after use to prevent the product from drying in the airbrush and causing a hard-to-remove clog! Rinse until the cleaner no longer fogs the topcoat.
